1) DON’T be nasty to the wait staff: These people have feelings, children and employers. Even bouncers/bartenders/dealers/cocktail waitresses have their boundaries! Think about this, you might be there to have a good time but these people have rules they have to follow.

2) DON’T dance on the chairs, the tables, the bar: You’ll only have a chance to be up there for 30 seconds – the exact amount of time it will take for the security guard to come over to you and order you to climb back down. Don’t climb up on any part or article of furniture unless you see other patrons doing it. And don’t think because there is professional dancing up on a podium that you can join them. This is a sure way of being kicked out of the club.

3) DON’T forget to tip. The staff lives almost completely on tips and their actual hourly earnings is somewhere around minimum wage. If you decide not to leave a tip at all you should expect really bad table service and a swarm of animosity to hang close to you. Cocktail waitresses and bartenders will really avoid you. Dealers and slot attendants should be tipped when you win, and the valet and cocktail waitresses should be tipped all the time. The only difference between a great tip and a horrible tip is a few dollars.

4) DON’T avoid the crosswalk when crossing Las Vegas Blvd. Crazy tourists die every year when they try to dodge the taxis, locals and drive-in visitors that speed down the street at 60+ mph. Even So, if your safety doesn’t convince you, maybe the cops giving you a jaywalking ticket of $250 will. Millions of dollars has been spent by Clark County paying for the pedestrian overpasses. Use them.

5) DON’T hit on a cocktail waitress. Guys: They might be in short dresses and they might be flirting with you, but that’s because that’s their JOB. Their warm smiles and enthusiastic salutations are what their employers want them to do and these behaviors doesn’t mean that they like you/are in love with you/desire to be intimate with you. Making a move on them will do nothing but cause them to roll their eyes as they walk by. Simply enjoy the drinks, the laughter and the atmosphere and forget about anything else.

6) DON’T dress like a street walker. Girls: Please don’t snatch up the tiniest dress you own, which barely fit you 12 years ago, or use your holiday as a reason to purchase a new hoochie dress from Forever 21 that does not quite conceal all your parts. If you are 40+, don’t shop there. If you think this doesn’t apply to you, then it probably does. You’ll look and feel awkward and thus wind up drinking more to repress the insecurity. You might be trying for sexy but if you have love-handles it will show through that tank top or worse yet, rolls that show below that top. Ewww. Nobody wants to see that. Dress attractive, not hoochie – there IS a difference.

7) DON’T be a jerk. You aren’t Joe Pesci in Casino and nobody will see you as being cool because you are acting like a ego-tistical jerk. Don’t walk around and pretend like you are the big man in Vegas unless you are actually Sean Combs or Janet Jackson. If you are reading this, you most likely are not them.

Short Hair

Think about all those bright wild fashions in the “Austin Powers” movies-with hairstyles to match. The short geometric hairstyles made famous by models like Twiggy and seen on hundreds of dancers in TV shows, these simple, angular cuts are geared to bone-straight hair. Revisit them for clubbing by putting a modern twist on them, ala the Posh Spice bob.

Long hair works well on teens and twenty-somethings. Usually worn straight, you may add wave with curlers or a curling iron depending on the length.

Bouffants and Beehives

A 1950s or 1960s theme night at a club brings in all kinds of retro hairdos, including the bouffant and the beehive. Of course, the Amy Winehouse version is in vogue now, but the troubled songstress wasn’t the first to perfect the look.

Leather jacketed rocker gals championed the look in the 50s and First Lady Jackie Kennedy brought the bouffant look into the mainstream in the early 1960s. Achieve the beehive look by using a combination of different size rollers and sectioning the hair from front to back. The large curls required huge hair rollers secured with bobby pins. Clairol hot rollers or the drugstore bought soft rollers (yes, they still make ‘em). The Amy Winehouse bouffant is simpler. Just section the hair and clip on a hairpiece to the crown of the head.

GOTH (The Goth look)

Hair color really makes a difference with Goth hair. This genre, characterized by deep black and burnished red colors, lends itself to longer hair, intricate braiding and the occasional choppy or spiky style.

If you’re going out to a Goth or ‘industrial music’ club, you’ll need a hairstyle that complements the PVC, leather or vinyl favored by patrons of such clubs, and longer hair just looks better with most of those outfits. Try browsing Goth music or fashion sites to get ideas for potentials hairstyles. If you don’t have time to braid your own hair, try Sally Beauty Supply or other stores for clip-ons.

Don’t wash your hair everyday if you want to maintain vivid punk or Goth colored hair. If you dye your hair extreme ‘Goth’ black, it’s hard to go back. It’s best to visit a professional colorist to prevent damage if you want to return to your original color. The same goes for hair colored with henna. If you change your mind a lot or are a hairstyle chameleon stick with icy blondes or spray/paint on colors. You can accessorize Goth hair with everything from spider web clips to skull and skeleton bows.

EMO/SHORT

Don’t mistake the punk cuts mentioned above for ‘emo.’ Emo hair is much shorter and less dependent on color and accessories than Goth hair. Short and choppy works best. Show your ears with the pixie cut, which looks even better with crazy colors. Girls’ emo hair tends to be really short and messy, either directly from the cut or from scrunching it up yourself after the fact. Try a pixie cut that exposes the ears, preferably with bangs. Add streaks. At any given club or emo concert, you’ll find girls (and some guys) with dark brown or black hair with white streaks or tips.

During the nineties House music was at it’s best in Amsterdam. International DJ’s came over to be part of the house revolution in clubs like the legendary Roxy, Mazzo and IT. Although most of them are gone there’s still some nice venues left to dance the night away.

Escape
This club on Rembrandtplein has a lot of reminiscence to the clubs from the early nineties. Famous for it’s Chemistry nights back in the days this place is now particularly known by the tourist. Although still perfect for a catchy night out this is not the place to go if you prefer the underground dance scene.

Jimmy Woo
Near Leidseplein this place offers a very cozy atmosphere, perfect sound system, lovely (but also pricey) drinks and if you’re lucky you might meet up with some of the local Dutch celebs. The play hiphop as well as house. Be sure to dress for the night otherwise they won’t let you in.

Studio 80
Also at Rembrandtplein this place is where you should go if you’re into energetic Tech house or Techno. Most of the nights the party doesn’t start before 2 AM, but continuous until the sun is already shining. A relatively low entry fee and down to earth decorations (none) provide the underground feel to this little venue.

Trouw
My favorite in terms of the music, drinks and looks. The owners have a clear sense of what’s hot and what’s not in the dance scene. The monthly Ratio nights are well visited. It’s location just outside the center ensures the folks that took the effort to get there now why, so you almost always have a nice crowd.

I’m just going to say it right now, I hate clubbing. The music’s too loud, a lot of creepy guys are there, and people in my crew are always getting drunk. Not to mention that the club has its reputation as one of the hardest places to pick up women. However for all the negatives there are, I find myself going there every week. On a Saturday night, that’s where all the attractive women on.

Clubbing is what separates the men from the boys. You’re either one of the guys dancing with women on the floor, or you’re on the sideline with your Corona watching him. It’s difficult, but definitely possible.

1. Whoever approaches the most, leaves with the most numbers

When it comes down to it, clubbing is really just a numbers game. Some women come to the club just to dance with their girlfriends (while dressing like they want every guy to approaching them). It’s hard to weed out which girls are approachable and which are not. The best thing to do is to just grab your balls, and go for it. If you get rejected, then move on to the next girl. And don’t take it personally or let it ruin your night. If you approach a girl, you have a 50% chance of success. If you don’t approach, then you have 0%.

2. It’s all about Social Proof

Not only do people judge you by what you wear, but they also judge you by who you’re with. Who’s more attractive: The guy with a few girls at the bar taking shots with them, or the guy with his friends standing near the wall checking out the dance floor? I always try to take females friends along when I can. I like to dance with them at the beginning because it lets me scout the area to see who’s there, much better than walking around by yourself.

The majority of women that I meet are through people I already know in the club. After you start going there a while, you’ll get to know more people and start noticing a lot of the same groups go every week. When I enter I say hi to everyone I know, and usually they bring with them some friends. I get introduced and it’s game on, no need for the approach phase.

3. What to wear

Many clubs are strict when it comes to the way you dress entering the club. My friend gets in all the time for this one club wearing black converses, but he can’t get into another wearing the same thing.

The “safe” outfit – Black oxfords, dark socks, dark jeans, a button up dress shirt (top 1-2 buttons unbuttoned and you can roll up the sleeves to slightly below the elbows).

You can get into any club wearing this and you won’t look “bad.” But if you read my article on peacocking, then you know you wanna look a little bit different from the standard. Personally I like wearing a t-shirt with an interesting blazer.

I know this is common sense, but please take a shower and wear some anti-perspirant before you go out. Also put on some decent cologne because you’re going to get close when you dance. My two favorites are Issey Miyake and Burberry Brit. If you don’t have a cologne, ask a female friend to help you pick one out at Sephora or Macy’s.

4. Have a good wingman

Women are never alone in the club. The best targets in my opinion are when two girls are by themselves. You can approach them by yourself, but the girl you’re with is not going to leave her friend to dance with you. That’s where having a good wingman can be helpful. Also wingmen can encourage you to to approach and help you rebound. I remember one time we had an approach go bad. Afterwards my wingman told me “Man those bitches are ugly anyways, let’s find someone else.” We kept going and found ourselves even better women later.

The golden rule is whoever approaches the girls and picks them up, gets first pick. So don’t be bitching about getting the fat chick if your buddy made the moves .

5. Don’t drink too much

Approach -> Talk -> Dance -> Get her phone # -> Go somewhere with her.

You approach the women with whatever opener you have. You talk to her a bit and engage her. When a song I like comes on I tell her I love this songs. “Let’s go dance” and take her hand to the dance floor.

The dance floor is something that comes with experience and hard to put into words. But basically you make small advances towards her and see what her limits are. I’ve had success making out with women on the dance floor, but the majority of them just want to dance at this stage. After dancing I take her back to where my friends are and we all drink. Talk to her a bit more and get her phone number. The clubs usually close at 2 or 3am and I always go out and eat with my friends, so I will invite her along. After that the rest is up to you.

Clubbing can be intimidating for anyone that’s going there for the first time. But like all things, you’ll improve with experience.
